If you want to dig in deep, we could be a good fit. Whether you have a specific diagnosis or are not sure what is making you feel empty or worried, we could try together to better understand what is going on. Shame and fear are often underneath many things that distress us. This frequently shows up in challenging personal or work relationships. This can stem from power imbalances or not knowing how to communicate needs or create and uphold standards for ourselves. I am keenly aware of the dehumanizing forces in society and am open to discuss if you feel affected by these realities.
I am warm, smart, compassionate, curious and love my work. I am not scared of intense emotions. I have worked in diverse settings such as a psychiatric crisis clinic, an inpatient hospital unit and a chronic pain program and have had a private practice since 2001.
Feel free to reach out and we can have a 15 minute consultation to explore whether we might make a good team. I look forward to connecting with you.
Johanna Murphy, PhD
I am a licensed psychologist in private practice in Berkeley and Orinda, with 25 years of clinical experience and extensive training in psychodynamic psychotherapy. I currently work with individuals and couples, specializing in the areas of spirituality and creativity, loss and grieving, life transitions, and women’s health.
I take a developmental approach to understanding the root causes of the patient’s difficulties and then understanding the problem within their given context. I facilitate a deep inquiry into what has blocked the healing process and help people recognize how to create the life they desire. All of my training and clinical experience inform my work and allow me to use an integrative style adapted to each patient's individual needs.
My pre-doctoral training at Stanford University included a mindfulness-based integrative approach to psychotherapy that has continued to influence my work today. My post-doctoral training at the California College of Arts strengthened my interest in the creative, expansive aspects of the therapeutic process. I have a warm and empathic style.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with transitional-age youth and adults adjusting to significant life transitions such as leaving home, attending college, building careers, beginning or ending relationships, parenthood, empty nest, and retirement. I have over 8 years of experience working with law students as they navigate law school, the bar exam, and the first few years of their careers.
In my experience, individuals make better life choices, create positive change, and move through life transitions by understanding themselves and their feelings. This understanding can affect change and acceptance of oneself and others. I use an integrated approach to meet the needs of each patient. Much of my training has been in contemporary psychodynamic theory, relational theory and strength-based models. My 7 years working in a Bay Area high school with high-risk youth gave me a deep understanding of how the experiences of adolescents impact our lives and shape our identity. I aim to create a safe and supportive environment where patients can make positive, lasting changes.
